Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats
If you’re looking for one of the quickest treats to bring to an event or get-together, look no further. This is my favorite Rice Krispy treat recipe as the salt and brown butter adds so much flavor to an already classic taste. I like to use a 9x13 baking pan for this particular recipe, which will make 24 treats, but you could totally use a 9x9 pan if you wanted 12 extra chonky treats.
The original recipe is from Smitten Kitchen, and can be found here.
You will need…
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1/4 tsp sea salt
1- 12 oz bag marshmallows
1/2 cup unsalted butter
First you will need to grease your pan. You can use extra butter, shortening, or a non-stick baking spray. Measure out your Roce Krispy cereal, salt, and open the marshmallows so all of your ingredients are ready to go.
Melt the butter in a Dutch oven or large pot. Keep a close eye on the butter as it melts because once it begins to brown, it can burn very quickly. The butter will bubble for the first couple minutes as it melts down. The bubbles will turn clear and then quickly turn foamy. You will soon start to see dark brown “flecks” as you stir the butter. You’ll also start to smell a nutty flavor. Once the butter has browned, turn off the heat and add all of the marshmallows.
Once the marshmallows melt, Add the Rice Krispies and salt. Mix thoroughly with a spatula. You can tell when the mixture is coated thoroughly when you see a difference in how the marshmallows pull away from the Rice Krispies as you mix.
Add the mixture to your prepared pan. I like to use a piece of greased parchment paper to press the mixture evenly into the pan.
At this point, if you’re feeling festive you can top with sprinkles to decorate.
Once the treats are cooled, cut and serve! These will keep for4-5 days in a sealed container at room temperature.
